These balls are not meant for mechanical filtration, so they shouldn't be used in sand filters. The product has an impressive surface area of 15.5 square inches per ball. The number of bio-balls needed for a pond depends on the size of the pond and the filtration system. A 300-gallon pond with fish requires at least 300 bio-balls and three pieces of 20x20x1-inch Japanese mats to prepare 50 gallons of clean water. Feedback from customers is largely positive. Users have reported that the bio-balls do an excellent job of catching debris from the pond and are easy to clean. One user was pleased to see instant results in their pond's water clarity after using these balls. However, one user found the product terrible and replaced it with lava rock. Another user pointed out that the price could be more affordable.
